REATION AND
NGELS
The preface shows the connection of this commonplace with the preceding commonplace, § 1, and then discusses the will of God in general, § 2, and specifically the distinction of God’s hidden and revealed will, § 3, and its immutability, § 4. LECTION AND
EPROBATION
In the preface, the author discusses the order of divine decrees, of which there are chiefly two: of creation and of restoration of the human race through the Son, § 1. With regard to man, the first decree was creation in God’s image, which was supposed to be propagated to all Adam’s descendants, § 4. Then God gave the law about not eating from the fruit of the forbidden tree with the threat of death, § 8. Then He foresaw man’s transgression but did not cause it, § 10. Next, He made a decree of restoration through the Son, whose merit would be applied through faith, § 12. Now the decree of election and reprobation can be explained, and the fictitious absolute decree of both election and reprobation can be overthrown, § 16.

After explaining the transition from the previous commonplaces to this one, § 1, the preface explains God’s deliberation in creating man (Gen. 1:26) and defends it from the false explanations of the rabbis, § 2. Man’s body was formed from the ground, § 11, but the soul came from God’s inbreathing, § 12. Man was created after the image and likeness of God, § 13.
