John wanted to know why people believed what they did, for what we believe governs how we behave. And the way we behave plays a big part in how open we are to the Christian faith. This is why ‘double listening’ is important.
If people think this life is all there is, their priority is to have fun and make money to enjoy themselves. So teenagers work hard to save up for an iphone, or computer software, or clothes, or a flatscreen TV for their room, or a motorbike or a car. Their parents work hard to upgrade their computer, buy a bigger house, or have more family holidays. These families won’t be able to come to church on Sundays as they will be working, or shopping, or playing sport. They won’t want to change this way of living, unless they can be persuaded that their way of thinking is wrong.
