Several friends helped me to refine the telling of this story. I am grateful to this reading panel for their time and their advice: Megan Carlson, Gabriel Chan, Emily-Rose Hicks, Steven Jordan, Zoë Parmenter, Kaitlin Wells and Tom Wells.
My thanks also go to Frances Whitehead for her warm encouragement along the way. John Stott died shortly after the book was completed, and I'm glad Frances was able to read parts of it to him.
I have gained much from stories collected by earlier biographers, Timothy Dudley-Smith and Roger Steer, and from Chris Wright’s gathered reminiscences from a few of John Stott’s friends, which were published for his 90th birthday. In addition, several people whose names appear in this book have given me their personal memories, and/or introduced me to others who could reconstruct episodes from decades earlier. We share a hope that readers will come to know more about John Stott, will be moved by his love for Christ, and will benefit from his writing.
