23. For those who do not know how to calculate the age of the Moon
TRANSLATION
''December: 347 on the ides''. Subtract the seven ides, and 340 remain.
Add 9, and it makes 349. Divide by 59: 59 times 5 is 295. Subtract 295 and 54 remain. Subtract 30, and 24 remain. On the day in question, it is the 24th [day of the] Moon.
In using this formula, it is helpful if the calculator commits the products of the ¢fty-nine-times table to memory:
59 times 6 is 354 59 times 5 is 295 59 times 4 is 236 59 times 3 is 177 59 times 2 is 118 59 times 1 is 59.221
By the same procedure, you ¢nd the weekday for any date you wish by adding the [week]day of the kalends of January. For example, if you want to know /353/ what the weekday will be on the 8th kalends of October [September 24] in a year in which the kalends of January is celebrated on the ¢fth day of the week [Thursday], say ''October: 274 on the kalends''. Subtract the eight [kalends of October] and 266 remain. Add the ¢fth weekday on which the kalends of January fell, and that makes
271. Divide by 7: 7 times 30 is 210, 7 times 8 is 56; 5 are left over. It is the ¢fth day of the week on the 8th kalends of October.
23. FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW HOW TO
CALCULATE THE AGE OF THE MOON
Should anyone be so lazy or slow-witted as to wish to know the course of the Moon without any of the trouble of calculating, he must rely on the alphabets which he sees, distributed according to the course of the Moon, in the calendar (in annali libello), where there are three alphabets, comprising two lunar cycles, that is, ¢fty-nine days.222 Whatever letter is assigned to the Moon for a given age, [the Moon] will always have this same [letter] at the same age throughout the entire year, unless perhaps
(but this happens rarely) the computation of the embolisms changes it.223
221 Bede only gives the multiplication table up to 6, because that is the maximum number of times 59 can be divided into 365.
222 See Appendix 1.
223 As Bede explained in ch. 20, this occurs after the insertion of the embolismic month in the 8th, 11th and 19th years of the cycle.
