  1. 1.Ver. 2, Κολοσσαῖς, א, B, D, F, G, L; but probably πρὸς Κολασσαεῖς in the later superscription.
  2. 2.This, if the reading of B, D, Origen, &c., be correct, is the only instance where God the Father stands alone in the opening benediction. The briefest summary of the Epistle is as follows:—I. Introduction: 1:1, 2, Greeting; 1:3–8. Thanksgiving; 1:9–13, Prayer. II. Doctrinal: the person and office of Christ, 1:13–2:3. III. Polemical: warnings against error, and practical deductions from the counter truths, 2:4–3:4. IV. Practical: general precepts, 3:5–17; special precepts, 3:18–4:6. V. Personal messages and farewell. 4:7–18.
  3. 3.Ver. 6, καρποφορούμενον, “spontaneously bearing fruit” (ver. 10, καρποφοροῦντες), and yet gaining progressive force in doing so (αὐξανόμενο.).
  4. 4.Ver. 7, ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, א, A, B, D, F, G. This can only mean that Epaphras preached on St. Paul’s behalf—i.e., in his stead—and, if it be the right reading, furnishes another decisive proof that St. Paul had never himself preached in these Churches.
  5. 5.1:9–14. The “by His blood” of the E. V. is a reading interpolated from Eph. 1:7.
  6. 6.Dr. Lightfoot, in his valuable note (p. 209), shows that Christ is spoken of firstin relation to God—the word εἰκών involving the two ideas of Representation and Manifestation; and, secondly, in relation to created things—the words πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως involving the idea of mediation between God and Creation, and πρωτότοκος being applied to the Logos by Philo, and to the Messiah in Ps. 89:27. It implies priority to, and sovereignty over, all creation. It seems as though there were already tendencies to find the cross an offence, and to distinguish between the crucified Jesus and the ascended Christ (1:9, 20–22; 2:6–9).
  7. 7.3 Ver. 16, ἐκτίσθη, “created by one word.” No definite angelology can be extracted from these words (cf. 2:18; Eph. 1:21). The hierarchies of the pseudo–Dionysius are as entirely arbitrary as Milton’s “Thrones, dominations, virtues, princedoms, powers, Warriors, the flower of heaven.” But to say that the passage is gnostic, &c., is absurd in the face of such passages as Rom. 8:38; 1 Cor. 15:24.
  8. 8.1:15–23. At ver. 20 begins a sketch of Christ’s work, first generally (20), then specially to the Colossians (21–23).
  9. 9.Cf. Eph. 3:2–9; 1 Tim. 1:11.
These latter words throw light on the former. Christ’s sacrifice is, of course, “a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world,” and the sufferings of saints cannot, therefore, be vicarious. But they can be ministrative, and useful—nay, even requisite for the continuance of Christ’s work on earth; and in that sense St. Paul, and every “partaker of Christ’s sufferings” (2 Cor. 1:7; Phil. 3:10) can “personally supplement in Christ’s stead (ἀνταναπληρῶ) what is lacking of Christ’s afflictions on behalf of His body, the Church.” Steiger, Maurice, Huth, &c., read “the sufferings of the Christ in my flesh;” but there can be no Χριστὸς in the σὰρξ which Christ destroys.
  11. 11.Ver. 2. Read τοῦ Θεοῦ, Χριστοῦ. (Lightfoot, Col., p. 318.)
  12. 12.Ver. 8, τις, indefinitely definite (cf. Gal. 1:7).
  13. 13.Remarkable as being the only place where St. Paul uses the word “philosophy,” just as he only uses “virtue” once (Phil. 4:8). Both are superseded by loftier conceptions.
  14. 14.See supra, p. 152. (Gal. 4:3, 9).
  15. 15.θεότης, deitas; stronger than θειότης, divinitas.
  16. 16.2:7–10.
  17. 17.Ver. 11, ἀπέκδυσις.
  18. 18.Cf. Phil. 3:10.
  19. 19.Deut. 27:14–26; Gal. 2:19, 4:9. The “ordinances” are those of the Mosaic and the natural law. The δόγμασιν is difficult; the rendering ‘consisting in ordinances’ would seem to require ἐν, as in Eph. 2:15. Also the Greek fathers made it mean “wiping out bythe decreesoftheGospel.”
  20. 20.Tearing himself free from the assaults of evil spirits, which would otherwise have invested Him as a robe (cf. 1 Pet. 5:5, ἐγκομβώσασθε; Heb. 12:1, εὐπερίστατος; Isa. 11:5, &c.), He carried away their spoils, as trophies, on His cross.
  21. 21.2:11–15. For θριαμβεύσας, cf. 2 Cor. 2:14, supra, vol. i., p. 636.
  22. 22.“This is the path of the Thorah. A morsel with salt shalt thou eat; thou shalt drink also water by measure” (Perek. R. Meir).
  23. 23.If after nineteen centuries the Christian Church has not understood the sacred freedom of this language, we may imagine what insight it required to utter it in St. Paul’s day, and how the Jews would gnash their teeth when they heard of it. When “the Emperor” asked R. Akibha how he recognised the Sabbath day, he said, “The river Sambatyon (the so–called ‘Sabbatic river’) proves it; the necromancer proves it (who can do nothing on the Sabbath); thy father’s grave proves it (which smokes, to show that its tenant is in hell, except on the Sabbath, on which day even hell rests”).—Sanhedrin, f. 65, 2. Myriads of passages might be quoted to show that it was the very keystone of the whole Judaic system: see Babha Kama, f. 82, 1; AbhodaZara, f. 64, 2, &c. The law of the Sabbath, as our Lord strove
  24. 24.Ver. 7. Notice the change from ἐρʼῥιζωμένοι, the permanent result of stability, to ἐποικοδομούμενοι, the continuous process of edification. Notice, too, the confusion of metaphor which is no confusion of thought: “walk,” “rooted,” “being built,” “being strengthened.”
  25. 25.2:1–7.
1 Sam. 18:22, &c. See Aug., Beng., Olsh., Lightf.
  27. 27.Angelology of the most developed description existed in the Jewish Church long before Gnosticism was heard of. See Gfrörer, Jahr.des Heils. i. 124, seq. I have collected some of the facts in a paper on Jewish Angelology and Demonology (Life of Christ, ii. 465, seq.). Neander refers to the κήρυγμα Πέτρου, and Clem. Alex. Strom. vi. 635. Theodoret (ii. 18) mentions that even in his day there were oratories to the Archangel Michael.
  28. 28.ἂ ἑορακεν (א, A, B, D. Dr. Lightfoot and others make the very simple conjectural emendation, ἅ ἑόρακεν κενεμβατέυων, auts.a. This does not indeed occur in any MS., but its disappearance would be easily explained—(i.) by the homœoteleuton; (2.) by the rare verb. The verb κενεμβατεύω (not unlike the ἀεροβατῶ καὶ περιφρονῶ τὸν ἥλιον, “I tread the air and circumspect the sun,” of Arist. Nub. 225, and the αἰθεροβατεῖτε of Philo, i. 465) might conceivably have been suggested by one of the heretical theosophic terms, if κένωμα had ever been used by some incipient Gnostic of that day (as afterwards) by way of antithesis to Pleroma. But may not ἅ ἑώρακεν ἐμρατεύων be taken (metaphorically) to mean “dwelling upon what He has seen”?
  29. 29.The accordance of the passage with the highest scientific range of that age is remarkable, and may be due to St. Luke.
  30. 30.Mark 7:1–23.
  31. 31.Ver. 6, our ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας, introduced probably from Eph. 5:6.
  32. 32.Ver. 11. The Scythians were the lowest type of barbarians (Gal. 3:28).
  33. 33.Christian hymnology began very early, though the hymns were not necessarily metrical (Rev. 15:3; Acts 16:25; Eph. 5:19, 20; Plin. Ep. 97; Mart.S.Ign.vii. H. E. v. 28. Rhythmic passages are Eph. 5:14; 1 Tim. 3:16; 6:15, 16; 2 Tim. 2:11–13 (Dict.Christ.Antt.s. v. Hymns).
  34. 34.3:1–17.
  35. 35.4:8, leg., ἵνα γνῶτε τὰ περὶ ἡμῶν (A, B, D, F, G).
  36. 36.Archippus is believed to be a son of Philemon, and chief presbyter of Laodicea. If so, Tychicus would see him on his way to Colossæ. It is at least curious that the lukewarmness, the lack of zeal which seems here to be gently rebuked, is the distinguishing character of the Laodicean Church, as represented by its “angel” in Rev. 3:15. (Trench, SevenChurches, 180.)
  37. 37.Prov. 2:4; Matt. 13:44; 1 Cor. 2:7; 4:5.
  38. 38.ὡς ἀνῆκεν, “as ever was, and ever is fitting” (cf. Acts 22:22). (See my BriefGreekSyntax, § 140.)
  39. 39.Notice the rare originality of the exhortation. Should we expect to find it in a forger?
  40. 40.3:18–25. From such passages as these were drawn such noble warning rules of feudalism as: “Entre toi vilain, et toi seigneur, il n’y a juge fors Dieu.” These humble practical rules might be all the more necessary for those who looked on outward family duties as vulgar, and obstructions to spiritual contemplation. (Maurice, Unity, 587.) How different this from οὐδὲ
  41. 41.4:1–6.
  42. 42.τὴν ἐκ Λαοδικείας, “written toLaodicea and coming to them from Thrace.” Constructio praegnans. (BriefGreekSyntax, § 89; Winer, § lxvi. 6). There can be little doubt that this was the Epistle to the “Ephesians.” The apocryphal Epistle to Laodicea is a miserable cento. (See Lightfoot, Col. 340–366; Westcott, Canon, p. 572.)
  43. 43.This rendering “Plenitude”—in the sense of “completeness” and “completed fulfilment”—will be found to meet all the uses of the words in St. Paul, both in its ordinary sense (1 Cor. 10:26; Rom. 11:12, 25; 13:10; 15:29; Gal. 4:4; Eph. 1:10), and in its later quasi– technical sense, as applied to the “totality of the Divine attributes and agencies” (Col. 1:19; 2:9; Eph. 1:23; 3:19; 4:13). It is directly derived from the O. T. usage (Jer. 8:16, &c.); and the later localised usage of Cerinthus and Valentinus is in turn derived from it. If it be derived from πληρόω, in the sense of “fulfil” rather than its sense to “fill,” the difficulties of its usage by St. Paul are lessened; I cannot say that they disappear. Lightfoot, Col. 323–339. Those who wish to see other views may find them in Baur, Paul. ii. 93; Pfleiderer, ii. 172; Holtzmann, Eph. Col. 222, seq.; Fritzsche on Rom. 10:1. On the connexion of πλήρωμα with the Hebrew םוקמ there are some valuable remarks in Taylor’s PirqueAboth, p. 54. Makom, “place” = 186, and by Gematria was identified with Yehovah, because the squares of the letters of the Tetragrammaton (10² + 5² + 6² + 5²) give the same result (Buxt. Lex.Chald.2001). So far from being exclusively gnostic, Philo had already said (DeSomniis, 1.) that the word has three meanings, of which the third is God. Hence the interesting Alexandrianism in the LXX. of Ex. 24:10, “God,” said a celebrated Jewish proverb, “is not in Ha–Makom [the “Place,” the “Universe”], but all Ha–Makom is in God.”
  44. 44.2:16–23. This remarkable passage, which is very obscure in the E.V., is an argument against, not for, the worrying scrupulosities of exaggerated asceticism—on the ground that they are useless for the end in view. St. Paul might have gone even further; for the lives of hermits and monks show us that the virulence of temptation is intensified into insupportable agony by the morbid introspection which results from mistaken means of combating it.
  45. 45.Ver. 10, συναιχμάλωτος. Properly, “a fellow–captive taken in war.” So of Epaphras (Philem. 23, Andronicus, Junias Rom. 16:7.) In none of these cases can we tell the exact allusion, or whether the word is literal or metaphorical.
  46. 46.Barnabas was perhaps dead, and thus Mark would be free. Paul seems to have had a little misgiving about his reception.
  47. 47.Perhaps Paul’s insight into character is shown by his somewhat ominous silence about Demas. (2 Tim. 4:10.)
  48. 48.Ver. 15, αὐτῶν (א, A, C); αὐτῆς (B, Lachm.); αὐτοῦ (F, G, K, &c.).
  49. 49.This shorter form is characteristic of Paul’s later Epistles—Col. 1, 2 Tim., Tit. The longer form is found in all up to this date.
  50. 50.Ver. 21, ἀποκατηλλάγητε (B). The ἀπο, as in ἀπολαμβάνειν υἱοθεσίαν (Gal. 4:5) and ἀποκατάστασις, points to the restorationof a lost condition.
  51. 51.1:24–29.
  52. 52.Ver. 1. ἀγῶνα, referring back to ἀγωνιζόμενος, i. 29.
  53. 53.Read συμβιβασθέντες.
  54. 54.Ver. 19, κατοικῆσαι, not a παροικία or transient, but a κατοικία or permanent abode. Cf.
  55. 55.The repetition of the πάντα is a clear warning against esoteric doctrines, and the exclusive arrogance of intellectual spiritualism which is a germ of many heresies. It is naturally a favourite word of the Apostle who had to proclaim the universality of the Gospel (1 Cor.
  56. 56.Ver. 16, ἔκτισται, “have been created, and still continue.”
  57. 57.HE IS—ἔστιν, not ἐστιν (so Lightfoot), since the tense and the repetition of the pronouns imply pre–existence and personality (John 8:58; Ex. 3:14).
  58. 58.Ver. 23, ἐθελοθρησκεία, a happy coinage of St. Paul’s, which Epiphanius expands into ἐθελοπερισσοθρησκεία (Haer.i. 16).
  59. 59.The mystery of the equal admission of the Gentiles (1:27; 4:3; Eph. 1:10; 3:3, 8, and passim).
  60. 60.10:1; 12:29, 30, &c.). Τέλειος was used of those initiated into the mysteries.
  61. 61.so often to convince the Jews, is a law of holy freedom, not of petty bondage.
(Clem. Alex. Strom.iii. 12, § 84.)
