The Nature of Temptation
Temptation can be viewed as an opportunity for growth.
Instead of being a stumbling block, it can lead to spiritual maturity by providing choices that help you develop
Christ-like character. Temptations allow for the choice between doing good or evil, with each victory contributing to your growth in the character of Christ.
The Fruit of the Spirit
The fruit of the Spirit, including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, reflects the nature of Jesus. These qualities develop over time through circumstances where their opposites are tempting.
How Temptation Works
Temptation follows a predictable four-step process:
Desire: Temptation begins with an internal desire, which can be sinful or legitimate.
Doubt: Satan introduces doubt about God's commands and the nature of sin.
Deception: Lies substitute God's truth, minimizing the seriousness of sin.
Disobedience: The thought leads to action, resulting in sin.
Overcoming Temptation
To effectively combat temptation, consider the following steps:
Refuse to be intimidated
: Being tempted is part of life; it is not a sign of spiritual weakness. Temptation is normal and expected.
Recognize your pattern of temptation
: Identify situations and emotions that trigger temptation to prepare adequately.
Request God's help
: Communicate with God through short prayers when faced with temptation; He is always ready to assist.
