For verses in which God says he will “spend,” “satisfy” (RSV) or “give full vent to his anger” and thus judge his people for their inveterate rebellion, see, for example, Ezek. 5:13 ff.; 6:12; 7:8; 16:42,43; 24:13,14 and Lam. 4:11. In Psalm 89:33ff, however, it is his steadfast love according to his covenant promise and oath which direct him. “I will not … betray my faithfulness,” he says (v. 33). Compare the declaration in Isa. 53:11 that the Lord’s suffering servant, seeing the fruit of his soul’s travail, will “be satisfied.”
