Glimpses of Daily Lite
GREGORY OF NAZIANZUS TO KLEDONIOS (NOT
IDENTIFIED), LETTER 107 (382)
You ask what our silence means? It means a right balance between talking and being silent, for he who masters it whole shall easily master part of it [by speaking only when it is appropriate]. Moreover, silence makes wise the heart that does not chatter, but spends out only what it contains.
GREGORY OF NAZIANZUS TO KLEOONlOS,
LETTER 108 (382)
We do not talk, we observe silence, learning to tell only what is necessary, and training ourselves to conquer the passions. If someone chooses to do this, good! Anyhow, the advantage of being silent is that we need not answer to many.
GREGORY OF NAZIANZUS TO KLEDONIOS,
LETTER 109 (382)
I do not forbid you to visit us. If your tongue keeps silent, at least we shall listen with pleasure to what you say, since it is no less honorable to listen than to say what should be said!
