Unfinished Literal Commentary on Genesis 1 5 1

God in such a way as to be a triad. After all he did not say, as though speaking to the Son, Let us make man to your image—or to my image76—but he said in the plural, to our image and likeness; and who would dare to exclude the Holy Spirit from this plurality? Since this plurality is not three Gods but one God, one must realize that the reason why scripture later introduced the singular, and said, And God made man to the image of God (Gn 1 :27), was to show that it should not be taken as though it were God the Father making to the image of God, that is, of his Son; otherwise how could what had been said be true, "to our image," ifman had been made to the image of the Son alone? And thus, because what God said, "to our image," is true, that's why it went on to say God made man to the image of God, as though to say to his own image, and that is the Trinity itself.

62. There are some people, though, who think that the reason why "likeness" was not repeated and it did not say, "and God made man to the image and like ness of God," is because at that time he was only made to the image, while the likeness to him was being kept for later on in the resurrection of the dead, as though there could be any image in which likeness is not to be found! l mean to say, if it is totally not like, it is undoubtedly not image either. However, so that we may not appear to be answering them by reason alone, there is also the authority of the apostle James to be brought to bear, who says, when speaking of the human tongue: With it we bless Godand with it we curse men, who have been made to the likeness of God (Jas 3:9).

76. Taking the Son as the image of the Father (according to the previous interpretation), we can imagine the Father saying to the Son "Let us make man to my image and likeness, which is what you are."
