506 The Literal Meaning ofGenesis been received back in the resurrection of the dead, and this perishable thingputs on imperishability, and this mortal thing puts on immortality (1 Cor 15:53). Then, you see, all things will be crystal clear and out in the open without any false impressions, distributed without any ignorance in their respective orders, the bodily, the spiritual and the intellectual, in perfect bliss with their natures entire and undiminished.

Conclusion to the whole work

37, 70. l know indeed that some of those, who have expounded the sacred scriptures before me in a way that is much admired,70 have also explained what the apostle calls the third heaven like this; they wish to distinguish here between the "body-bound" person, the "soulish" person, and the spiritual person, and to have the apostle snatched up to the contemplation with surpassing clarity of that kind of incorporeal reality, the kind which even in this life spiritual people love above the rest and long to enjoy. Why l myself, on the other hand, have preferred to call spiritual and intellectual what they perhaps have called "soulish" and spir itual, thus simply giving other names to the same realities, l have already explained at sufficient length in the first pages of this book. lfwithin the limits of my abilities 1 have duly discussed these matters, then spiritual readers will either give me their approval, or else in order to grow more spiritual will derive some profit from their reading, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

But now at long last, with this conclusion we bring this whole work to an end, contained in twelve volumes.

70. The CSEL editors refer to the Questions about Genesis of Ambrose and Jerome, but without giving precise references.
