- John Duns Scotus Four Questions on Mary Translated with an Introduction and Notes by Allan B. Wolter, O.F.M.

John Duns Scotus Four Questions on Mary Translated with an Introduction and Notes by Allan B. Wolter, O.F.M.

This small book offers, in a Latin/English edition, a contribution of John Duns Scotus to the theological discussion on Mary the Mother of God. Controversial in the late thirteenth century, Scotus's "new theology" grapples with issues surrounding "The Predestination of Christ and His Mother," "The Immaculate Conception," "The Mar riage of Mary and Joseph," and "The Maternity of the Mother of God." His views had a profound influence on Marian doctrine and devotion over the centuries, culminating in Pius IX's dogmatic proclamation of Mary's Immaculate Conception in 1854. The ques tions are dealt with in Scotus's Ordinatio and are set up in the styl ized tripartite format used by medieval professional theologians in their commentaries on the Sentences of Peter Lombard.

Allan B. Wolter, O.F.M., was a member of the Sacred Heart Prov ince of the Friars Minor. A world-renowned Scotus Scholar, he was instrumental in preparing Latin/English texts of the philo sophical and theological works of John Duns Scotus. He held the Joseph Doino Visiting Professorship at the Franciscan Institute,

St. Bonaventure University from 1997 until he retired from ac tive scholarship in 2002. He died in Sherman, IL in 2006.
