Conclusion

Conclusion

appeared in human flesh, material things would not have been included in the rites of the new covenant.

While Irenaeus does not express this thought, one sees how his explanation of the sacraments is influenced by his desire to support the doctrines of creation and redemption. One also sees how this explanation is shaped in controversy and how it is affected by the culture that gave rise to gnosticism. On the one hand right faith can be drawn from the rite, on the other the elaboration of the faith in catechetical teaching or apologetic includes elements drawn from the cultural world that in turn influence the celebration of the rites and their expression of the rule of faith. There is a mutuality between the lex orandi and the lex credendi, rather than the strict dependency of one upon the other. Irenaeus not only enunciates the principle that worship and doctrine must correspond. He exemplifies it in showing how a tradition evolves through the organic interaction of teaching and liturgy. In that, his exemplification of the principle may go beyond his own enunciation of it.
