Chapter 2 of 6

The text of Against the Heresies has come down to us principally in an ancient Latin version. Some of the original Greek remains in quotations by Epiphanius of Salamis in his work known as Haereses, by Hippolytus in his treatise

Philosopboumena, and in the Sacra Parallela attributed to John Damascene. There are also fragments of Syrian and Armenian versions. Recently, the collection

Sources Chrétiennes has offered a reconstruction of the Greek text for the entire work, along with the Latin and a French translation. For the English version of pertinent texts used in this study, the basis was provided by the collection, The Ante-Nicene Fathers, volume 1. The Latin text and the Greek reconstruction were consulted, as well as other English translations noted in the bibliography, and the French translation given in Sources Chrétiennes.

The texts presented in this study have to do with baptism and with euchanst.

Commentary is offered by way of footnote. At the end, conclusions are drawn about the rites and doctrine of both sacraments, and about the relation between worship and doctrine.
