Shortwave Praying
“For the Lord takes delight in his people. Let the saints rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds.”
—Psalm 149:4-5
This verse is “me.” And my bed is where I pray best. Because my paralysis forces me to lie down early in the evening, I sometimes invite a friend over to sit on the edge of my bed and pray with me. While my husband is in the TV room tracking the latest football game, my girlfriend and I will prop ourselves up with pillows, make a prayer list, and intercede for the world.
Last week she sprang a surprise and brought a small shortwave radio. A window to the world, she called it. She flicked it on and tuned in Trans World Radio from the Caribbean. Another jiggle of the knob and we picked up someone leading a Bible study over station HCJB in Ecuador. A little more fiddling and we pulled in the BBC from Hong Kong. Together, my friend and I tuned in to the world.
Literally, within the walls of my room were voices from around the globe. We covered the planet, yet didn’t budge beyond my bed. That shortwave radio serves as a good lesson in prayer. In fact, the people around the world for whom we prayed that night seemed just beyond my bedroom walls. And you know what? They were.
Just as the voices of people around the world reached us through shortwave, my prayers, immediate and instant, were touching others. That very second, godly grace was being applied as I prayed, and I didn’t even have to leave my room.
Lord, the world is smaller than I realize and my prayers, like shortwaves, go farther than I imagine. Even though my intercessions for others seem so faint, thank You for amplifying prayer with Your power.
