Vive la Différence!

“The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’”

—Genesis 2:18

I like men. I like ministering alongside men, whether it’s my husband, the executive director of our ministry, or the pastor or elders of our local church. And there’s a good reason why.

The role of men and women in ministry is complementary. True enrichment for both Christian men and women comes when these roles are being fulfilled side by side. Why? A woman’s ministry is primarily maternal in flavor and style. The man’s, paternal. The natural role difference between, let’s say, a mother and father in a family, permeates virtually all cultures, and this marvelous and rich role difference should be reflected in the cooperative ministry of men and women in the church.

That’s why I enjoy working in partnership with male leaders. In such partnerships, the dynamics of the “helpmeet” relationship of Genesis 2:18 comes alive. I feel fulfilled. My husband or pastor or executive director feels fulfilled—all because we are following a calling that embraces us both.

Women are gifted for and called to service in the church, and the church must properly value and use women’s gifts. Oh, that we would see more women and men giving care for the weak, ministering the Word, nurturing families and children, visiting the sick, reaching prisoners…ad infinitum. The church has too much to do without squabbling about differences. Let’s enjoy our different roles and get on with ministry!

Thank You, Lord, that You made me who I am. Both men and women bear Your image and are equal…yet we are so different. Help us to complement one another and glorify You as we do.
