Then I said, "I consider it most appropriate that I repeat here the Scriptural passage which tells how he who is Angel and God and Lord, and who appeared as a man to Abraham, and who wrestled in human form with Jacob, was seen by the same
Jacob as he fled from his brother Esau.
11. "Here are the words: And Jacob went out from the Well of the Oath, and went towards Harran. And he came to a certain place, and slept there, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones that lay there, and putting it under his head, he slept in that place. And he saw in his sleep a ladder standing on the ground, with its top reaching to heaven; and the angels of God ascended and descended upon it. And the Lord, leaning upon the ladder, said:
12. "I the Lord am the God of Abraham your father, and of Isaac; fear not. The land on which you sleep, I will give to you and to your seed. And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and shall be spread abroad to the sea, and to the south, and to the north, and to the east; and in you and your seed all the tribes of the earth shall be blessed. And I will be your guard wherever you go, and will bring you back into this land; neither will I leave you, till I shall have accomplished all that I have said to you.
13. "And when Jacob awoke out of his sleep, he said: Indeed the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not. And trembling he said: How awesome is this place! This is no other but the house of God, and the gate of heaven. And Jacob, arising in the morning, took the stone, which he had laid under his head and set it up for a monument, pouring oil on top of it. And Jacob called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Ulam Luz." 31
