Chapter 9 of 27

32. And when I ceased, Trypho said, "My dear man,

32. And when I ceased, Trypho said, "My dear man,

shown in his suffering, how great will be the authority attached to his glorious Coming when it takes place!

For he will come as the Son of Man seated on clouds, as Daniel recorded, with angels accompanying him."

[There follows a quotation from Dan. 7:9-28.] 32. And when I ceased, Trypho said, "My dear man, these passages and others like them compel us to look for some glorious and great figure receiving the everlasting kingdom as Son of Man from the Ancient of Days.

But this man of yours who was called Christ was of humble origin and obscure, so much so that he even incurred the very last curse of God, for he was crucified."

I replied to him: "My argument would appear silly and incompetent, my friends, if I had not, as I have already recounted, expounded from the Scriptures that his form was said to be inglorious and his race indescribable, and that the rich should be put to death for his death and that we were healed by his stripe and that he was to be led away as a sheep|, and that two Comings of his were to take place, one in which he was pierced by you, the other in which you shall recognize him whom you have pierced, and all your tribes shall mourn, tribe by tribe, the women separately and the men separately?.

But as it is I have been producing proof texts throughout all our discussion from the prophetic Scriptures which are regarded as holy by you, in the hope that somebody among you might be found among that remnant which is preserved by the grace of the Lord of Hosts} for everlasting salvation.

But now, so that the subject under discussion should become clearer to you, I will relate to you some other passages spoken through the blessed David, from which you will perceive that the Christ is called Lord by the holy prophetic Spirit

Ysa. 53:2,3,5,7-9.

Tsa. 1:9.

and that the Father who is Lord of all has brought him up from the earth and seated him on his right hand, until he should put his enemies as a footstool under his feet!.

This has been the state of affairs since our Lord Jesus Christ was taken up into heaven after he had been raised from the dead.

The times are being fulfilled, and he who is destined to speak blasphemous and daring words against the Most High is even now at the doors, he whom Daniel declares to be destined to hold dominion for a time and times and half a time?.

[There follow expositions of Dan. 7:25, 2 Thess. 2:3 and Jer. 4.22 conflated with Isa. 29:14 and Ps. 109 (110) 1-7] . . .3.

35.7.

From these passages, as I have said, we take Jesus to have been a forecaster of events destined to happen after him, and from many other experiences which he foretold as about to happen to those who believed in him and confessed him as Christ.

He also foretold as destined to happen all the sufferings which we are enduring, when betrayed to execution by our own slaves, so that neither his speech nor his actions can appear open to blame.

That is why we pray both for you and for all other men who display hostility to us, that you may repent with us and many not slander him who is shown to be entirely irreproachable and innocent both by his actions and by the miracles which are even now taking place in his name, and by the principles of his teaching and by the prophecies which were predicted about him,

Christ Jesus. May you on the contrary believe in him and be saved at his glorious Coming Again when it takes place, and not be condemned to the fire by him."

[The question has been raised in cap. 45, who are to share in the resurrection from the dead:

Are the Jews to do so?| (Trypho is speaking) 1Ps 109 (110) :1.
