exhortations contained in what is called the gospel I understand to be so extraordinary and demanding that I suspect that nobody can keep them, for I have taken the trouble to look into them.
But we are perplexed most of all that you who profess to be pious and think that you excel others do not abandon their practices in any point nor alter your manner of life from that of the Gentiles, in as far as you do not observe the festivals nor the sabbaths nor keep up circumcision.
Another point, you set your hopes on a crucified man and yet you hope to gain some reward from God, without obeying his commandments.
Or have you not read that that soul will be destroyed from its race which will not be circumcised on the eighth day?! The same commandment is given about the foreigner and the foreign born slaves.
This covenant you directly despise and the later ones, and - you try to convert us as if you knew God, though you keep none of the customs which the proselytes do.
If therefore you have any defence to make to this and can show in any way that you have a ground of hope, even though you do not keep the law, this is what we would be particularly glad to hear, and we might examine the other subjects in the same way."

We do not imagine that you have one God and we another, but that same God who brought out your fathers from the land of Egypt with a strong hand and a high arm?. We have not hoped in any other, for none exists, but on this same one as you do, the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.
But we have not hoped in him through Moses nor through the law, otherwise we should be doing just as you do.
In fact, Trypho, I have 1Gen. 17:14.
2Deut. 5:15 or Ps. 135 (136) :12.
