Melchizedek (Gen 14 )
Joseph and Moses differ in many respects, but both became deliverers after being rejected by their own people whom they were called to deliver. Both also found refuge and welcome among foreign peoples (Joseph among Egyptians, eventually; Moses among Midianites). In both cases, this welcome included marriage into these foreign families, after being rejected among their people.
Lest we suppose it a mere coincidence that the fathers-in-law of both Joseph and Moses were gentile priests, narratives in the Pentateuch show that even gentile priests could be impressed enough to glorify Israel’s God. Even if Genesis could not report the faith of Joseph’s father-in-law, another priest was available for the comparison:
Melchizedek (Gen 14 )
Jethro (Exod 18 )
Priest of God Most High ( 14 : 18 )
Priest of Midian ( 18 : 1 )
Brought bread and wine ( 14 : 18 )
Fellowship meal ( 18 : 12 )
Blessed be God who helped you against your enemies ( 14 : 20 )
Blessed be YHWH who saved you from your enemies ( 18 : 10 )
