The source edition
This web edition follows With and Without Christ: Being Incidents Taken from the Lives of Christians and of Non-Christians Which Illustrate the Difference in Lives Lived With Christ and Without Christ, by Sadhu Sundar Singh, with an introduction by the Lord Bishop of Winchester, published by Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1929. The English text was translated from Sundar Singh’s Urdu with the help of the Rev. T. E. Riddle of Kharar, as the author notes in his preface.
The text here was transcribed from a photographic scan of a copy of that 1929 printing, page by page, against the printed page images rather than from machine OCR.
Copyright status
The work was published in the United States in 1929 and its United States copyright term has expired; it is in the public domain. The scan consulted for this transcription is additionally marked Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication (CC0 1.0) by the person who contributed it. UECF.NET claims no copyright in the text of Sundar Singh’s book, and makes no claim to be its original publisher.
Editorial method
The text is reproduced as printed. British spellings of the 1929 edition (realisation, civilisation, neighbour) are kept. The author’s Scripture citations are kept in the form he used, with Roman numerals for chapters. The small-capital section headings of the original—“A Bed of Spikes,” “Vows of Silence” and so on—are set here as subheadings so that they can be linked to directly. Obvious typesetting artefacts of the scan, such as words broken across a line with a hyphen, have been rejoined. Nothing has been modernised, abridged, summarised in place of the text, or added.
Where this edition adds anything of its own—the chapter summaries and Telugu-language summaries on the contents page—that material is UECF.NET’s own editorial work and is labelled as such. It is not part of Sundar Singh’s book.
A note on the contents page
The book’s own printed table of contents lists six chapters: Preface (vii), Introduction (ix), and chapters I–VI beginning on pages 1, 27, 54, 77, 105 and 138. An earlier version of this page on UECF.NET described the section beginning on page 105 as an “Appendix”; that was an error, corrected here against the book’s own contents page and the chapter headings as printed.
