About this book

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) was a pastor, missionary to the Mohican and Housatonic peoples, third president of the College of New Jersey (Princeton), and the foremost theologian-philosopher of colonial America. This volume opens with Sereno E. Dwight's classic Memoir of Edwards's life — his childhood, conversion, pastorate at Northampton, the Great Awakening, the communion controversy that cost him his pulpit, his mission at Stockbridge, and his brief presidency and death at Princeton — followed by his Farewell Sermon to Northampton and a documentary Appendix.

The volume then gathers twelve of Edwards's own treatises and sermon collections in full: Freedom of the Will, The End for Which God Created the World, The Nature of True Virtue, Original Sin, Religious Affections, the Narrative of Surprising Conversions, Thoughts on the Revival, the Humble Inquiry on communion, Misrepresentations Corrected, A History of the Work of Redemption, Five Discourses, and a short set of Theological Questions.
