Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) was a Congregationalist pastor at Northampton, Massachusetts, the leading theologian and defender of the First Great Awakening, and later a missionary to the Mohican and Mohawk peoples at Stockbridge. Widely regarded as colonial America’s most important theologian and philosopher, his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and treatises such as Freedom of the Will and Religious Affections remain foundational texts of American Reformed theology.

About Jonathan Edwards
Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, and entered Yale College as a young teenager. Called in 1726 to assist his grandfather Solomon Stoddard at Northampton, Massachusetts, he became sole pastor in 1729 and led the congregation through the 1734–35 revival that helped spark the trans-Atlantic Great Awakening of the 1740s. He is best remembered for his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” (1741) and for major theological and philosophical works including Religious Affections, Freedom of the Will and The Great Christian Doctrine of Original Sin Defended. Dismissed from Northampton in 1750 over a dispute about church membership, he served as a missionary pastor at Stockbridge before his brief presidency of the College of New Jersey (Princeton), where he died in 1758.
