Epilogue
early ministry and its social setting may be likened to a puzzle with several of its pieces missing. Some of the pieces stand alone without anything to connect them to the rest of the picture, others join with one or two other pieces to provide clues of how they might fit into the whole, but one's final estimation can only be a matter of probability. In such a situation we have found it best to make cautious and often tentative claims about a few selected communities rather than the Christian movement as a whole. We have argued that the church meeting in the homes of wealthier Christians provides a means for imagining how some of the missing pieces may have looked; we have claimed, further, that our reconstruction is better than others which have been proposed; but over any such reconstruction there must always be placed a question mark.
Any historical construction is a matter of probability and a chief task of the historian is to state accurately the weight of his or her claims and conclusions.
The novelist Margaret Atwood describes the challenge of the historian well when she has one of her characters say we may call Eurydice forth from the world of the dead, but we cannot make her answer [questions we ask her]; and when we turn to look at her we glimpse her only for a moment before she slips from our grasp and flees. As all historians know, the past is a great darkness, and filled with echoes. Voices may reach us from it; but what they say to us is imbued with the obscurity of the matrix out of which they come; and, try as we may, we cannot always decipher them precisely in the clearer light of our own day.2
The echoes of Christian communities in Rome, Corinth, and Asia Minor come to us in the voices of Clement, Hermas, and Ignatius, sometimes clearly, often only distantly. Imbued with the obscurity of their matrix they come to us.
The task of the historian is to listen patiently and attentively and to discern their meaning, even if only tentatively.
