Schaff's manuscripts prepared in Germany prior to his arrival in America illustrate that he spelled his name inconsistently as BOCHatY eanG sociation Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was born in the town of Chur, Switzerland, of humble parentage. He was educated in Germany at the universities of Tiibingen, Halle, and Berlin. At the age of twenty-five, he was elected professor of biblical literature and ecclesiastical history in the Theological Seminary of the German Reformed Church, Mercersburg, Pa. During the Civil War, Mercersburg, situated just a few miles north of the Mason-Dixon line, suffered raids by Confederate cavalry and the Seminary was temporarily closed in 1863. Schaff then moved to New York City to become secretary of the Sabbath Committee. In 1870 he was elected a professor at Union Theological Seminary, and held the chair of church history until his death. See David

S. Schaff, The Life of Philip Schaff (New York: Scribner, 1897) .
