Principal editions of Thomas Aquinas’s works

Leonine

Sancti Thomae Aquinatis doctoris angelici Opera omnia iussu Leonis XIII. P. M. edita. Cura et studio fratrum praedicatorum. Rome/Paris: Leonine Commission, 1882–.

Still in progress, this is the most authoritative edition of Thomas’s works, and it should be consulted whenever textual accuracy is crucial. About forty volumes have appeared to date. Volumes 2–15, which include four commentaries on physical works of Aristotle (2–3), the Summa theologiae (4–12), and the Summa contra gentiles (13–15), were produced without the full use of modern critical techniques. For the contents of the volumes, see the page devoted to the Leonine edition in the Corpus Thomisticum website (described below in the section on research tools).

Parma

Sancti Thomae Aquinatis Doctoris angelici ordinis praedicatorum Opera omnia ad fidem optimarum editionum accurate recognita. 25 vols. Parmae: typis Petri Fiaccadori, 1852–73. Reprint. New York: Musurgia, 1948–50.

Vivès

Doctoris angelici divi Thomae Aquinatis sacri Ordinis F.F. Praedicatorum Opera omnia. Studio ac labore Stanislai Eduardi Fretté et Pauli Maré Sacerdotum, Scholaeque thomisticae Alumnorum. 34 vols. Paris: apud Ludovicum Vivès, 1871–80.

Marietti

Handy editions of many of the major works were produced by the Marietti publishing house during the middle decades of the twentieth century. These are especially useful for the works that have not yet appeared in the Leonine edition. Some of the titles differ slightly (with little or no risk of confusion) from those given above, which follow the Leonine listing. For example:

S. Thomae Aquinatis. In duodecim libros Metaphysicorum Aristotelis expositio. Edited by M. R. Cathala and R. M. Spiazzi. 2nd ed. Turin/Rome: Marietti, 1971.

Sentences

Scriptum super Sententiis magistri Petri Lombardi. 4 vols. Edited by P. Mandonnet and M. F. Moos. Paris: P. Lethielleux, 1929–56. (This breaks off at Book IV, d. 22; for dd. 23–25, see the Parma edition, vol. 7/2, 872–1259.)

Other

There are other editions of many works; see Emery’s catalogue in Torrell, Initiation. Two not included in the catalogue, being of only probable authenticity, are the following.

Thomas Aquinas. Lectura romana in primum Sententiarum Petri Lombardi. Edited by L. E. Boyle, O.P. and J. F. Boyle. Studies and Texts 152. Toronto: Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, 2006.

Thomas Aquinas. Quaestio de immortalitate animae. In Leonard A. Kennedy, “A New Disputed Question of St. Thomas Aquinas on the Immortality of the Soul.” Archives d’Histoire Doctrinale et Littéraire du Moyen Âge 45 (1978) 205–23.
