A Life Worth Recovering
Addiction has been described as both “cunning” and “baffling” because it deceives and confuses as it has its way with its victim. What starts with a couple of drinks to relax, a prescription for chronic pain, or an experiment with a drug off the street can progress into dependencies with the force to destroy mind, body, and soul. Addiction ruins careers and annihilates relationships. The harder you try to stop it, the worse it gets and the tougher life becomes. The life God created, full of purpose and meaning, is lost to this powerful and progressive killer.
Every life is precious to God and worth recovering. Fortunately, there is a path to life that many have successfully followed. It is the path of surrender, beginning with the first step—acceptance of an extreme limitation: I cannot stop the addiction acting alone and under my own power. The next important step is to recognize that God can free me from addiction if I will work with him. The third step is to surrender to God and be willing to follow him and his path. His path always leads to joining fellow strugglers on the road to recovery. We cannot find health and a life of freedom by going it alone.
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. PSALM 119:105
