THE TEXT OF BRITISH MUSEUM MANUSCRIPT ADD.

17,126 A.

THE PROVENANCE AND CONDITION

OF THE TEXT

British Museum Manuscript Add.

17,126 is unique; that is to say that, as far as it can be ascertained, its contents are not duplicated in whole or in part in any other manuscript.?7°

It consists of fourteen fragments, thirty-eight folios in all, most of which are related to each other in style of handwriting, quality of vellum, and literary style and content.

The colophon of the concluding fragment tells us that "it was written in the city of Mabbug in the year 822 of Alexander of Macedon"

(i.e., A.D.

511).

Thus, it comes from the lifetime of its author, Philoxenus, and there is no reason to doubt that all the fragments were originally composed by him.

The story of its preservation and travels during the last fourteen and a half centuries is not known except for the following facts.

Between A.D.

927 and 932, the abbot of the Syrian monastery of St. Mary Deipara in the Nitrian Desert of Egypt, Moses of Nisibis by name, made an extended visit to Syria and Mesopotamia in which he collected some two hundred and fifty volumes for his monastery library.744

It is assumed that the manuscript before us belonged to Moses the Nisibene's collection.

Certainly, it was in the possession of the monks in that monastery in the nineteenth century when it was purchased from them (along with many others) by Auguste Pacho on July 31, 1847, who acted as agent for the British ‫: ‫»

It thus became the property of the British Museum on November 11, 1847, and has been preserved there ever since.

What the precise condition of this document was when acquired by the British Museum is not recorded.

We are dependent on W. Cureton for the general description of the Pacho manuscripts when the cases containing them were first opened:

The day after their arrival I went to inspect them.

At the first view I could almost have imagined that

the same portion of the library as had been brought nearly five years previously by Dr. Tattam was again before me in the same condition as I found it when the books were first taken from their cases in which they had been packed, as if the volumes had been stripped by magic of their russia, and clad in their original wooden binding; and the loose leaves and fragments, which had cost me many a toilsome day to collect and arrange, had been again torn asunder, and scattered in almost endless confusion.

Since Ms.

Add.

17,126 was apparently one of the manuscripts which had to be bound in the British Museum, and some of its papers have obviously been repaired there, it is reasonable to assume that its folios were among those "loose leaves and fragments .

. scattered in almost endless confusion."74/ The thirty-eight vellum folios of the manuscript contain fourteen fragments.

For convenience, we have numbered them as follows:

Fragment 1 = folios 1-2 Fragment 2 = folios 3-10 Fragment 3 = folio 11 Fragment 4 = folio 12 Fragment 5 = folio 13 Fragment 6 = folio 14 Fragment 7 = folio 15 Fragment 8 = folio 16 Fragment 9 = folios 17-18 Fragment 10 = folios 19-29 Fragment 11 = folio 30 Fragment 12 = folio 31 Fragment 13 = folio 32 Fragment 14 = folios 33-38 Fragments 2, 3 and 10 (except for its last folio [29] which is stained) are in an excellent state of preservation.

Fragments 4, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12 are stained but legible.

The rest have stains and tears which make portions of them illegible (the lower eight or nine lines of Fragment 13 have been torn off and lost, and the last four folios of Fragment 14 are so badly stained that they could only be partially read under ultra-violet light).

There is clear evidence for the fact that those who gathered the fourteen fragments of our manuscript together were

uncertain about the order in which to bind them.

Indeed, they initially felt that some of the fragments should be bound with another manuscript.

In the upper left corner of the recto side of each folio, three sets of Arabic numerals appear, written in pencil by two different scholars responsible for arranging the fotaca ss"?

Two sets of figures in the same handwriting are stroked out, and a third set in a different hand represents the foliation of the codex as it was finally bound.

Additionally, a fourth set of Arabic numerals appears in tiny unobtrusive writing on a few pages, inserted between the first and second lines of Syriac script, about the space of four or five letters to the right of the left margin. **?

The first set of figures to be stroked out is found on sixteen folios.

Since this numbering runs from 61 to 77 and the present manuscript has thirty-eight folios, we may conclude that the first "arranger's" initial decision was to include some of the fragments with another manuscript

(as yet unidentified).

Thus, the foliation in this set. appears as follows: nos.

61-71 = folios 19-29 = Fragment 10

= folio

= Fragment 13 no.

= folio il = lst folio of Fragment

now

= folio

= lst folio of Fragment 14 NO, LO = folio

= 2nd folio of Fragment

no.

= folio

= 2nd folio of Fragment

The tiny numerals seem to have come next in the process of sorting the fragments, and occur in the following order: nos.

1-8 = folios 3-10 = Fragment

no.

="fobioqr

= Fragment 3 NO.

The second set of "stroked-out" numerals represents the third stage in arranging the folios, and follows the present order except that the first two were made the last two; that is

-in this set, folios 1-36 are folios 3-38 in the present codex, and folios 37 and 38 are 1 and 2.

Perhaps the first three tentative foliations were done by W. Cureton, who resigned from the British Museum in 1850, and the final foliation by W. Wright, who began his work there in 1861 and

was responsible for compiling the Catalogue of Syrtae Manuscripts published in 10970

Syriac quire numbers are found at the foot of a few pages.

Folio 17v has a large well-marked beth and the next page (folio 18r) has an equally large gamal, apparently indicating that folio 17 concludes one quire and folio 18 begins the following one.

Fragment 10 contains a full clearly marked quire, because folio 19r has a heth (= "8") in the bottom right-hand corner written in the same script as the text, and 29r has a teth (= "9") of comparative size in the same position.

Thus, a quire in this fragment consists of ten folios.

Similarly, a yudh (= "10") appears in the bottom corner of folio 33r, the beginning of the last quire of the

° since the scripts of Fragments 10 and 14 original volume. are identical, we conclude that they were written by the same scribe and belong to the same original manuscript.

The quire numbers indicate that almost a complete quire is missing (that is, quire number teth except for folio 29) between Fragment 10 and Fragment 14.

The three single-folio fragments inserted by the British Museum may indeed be part of the missing quire for their handwriting is the same as that of Fragments 10 and 14.

Some fragments differ from others in their style of handwriting and size of margins.

Fragments 2 and 6-14 have the same kind of carefully formed Estrangela, and belong in some way together.

This is also borne out by the fact that the margins in these fragments invariably have the same dimensions.

The scribe drew a rectangle on the recto side of the folio approximately 6 5/8" x 4 1/8", then pin-pricked the corners to draw the same rectangle on the verso side.

He wrote on top of the upper horizontal line, maintained his vertical margins throughout the page, but did not feel compelled to stay within the lower horizontal line, often writing a line of text below it (in folio 28v he went three lines below it, perhaps because it was the last page of the quire and he was attempting to retain the contents of the quire he was copying).

The average number of lines to a page is twenty-seven.

While its script and margins are the same as the others in this group, the vellum of Fragment 6 is less well preserved than (and/or inferior to) that of the others.

Fragment 1 is in many ways similar, to the majority of the fragments described above, and no doubt came from the same scriptorium in Mabbug as they, but its scribe was not the same.

The horizontal lines of the margins are 1/8" shorter, the dimensions of the rectangle in both folios being approximately

6 5/8" x 4".

The letters in this fragment have the same general form as the others, but are subtly bolder and larger; the lamadhs and teths, for example, are longer, and the 'es and shins extend beyond the right margin.

It is unlikely that it belonged to the same original codex as the others, although without doubt it is a fragment of a Philoxenian work.

Fragments 3, 4 and 5 are noticeably different from the others.

They are written on an older or less well-preserved vellum, and the penmanship is more angular.

Wright noticed this and thought they might "belong to the missing portion of De Halleux, following Wright's suggestion, Add.

14 ; 633 .% 2 categorically states that these three fragments (which he treats as one) "proviennent du commentaire de Jean de 1'Add.

14,534, comme 1l'indique clairement le style de 1'écriture. "773

But this is not so for the following reasons:

1) The style of writing is not precisely the same as is found in Add.

14,534.

The latter sustains the same script throughout its 199 folios which is more angular than Fragments

3-5 of our manuscript.

Distinctive differences are seen in forms like he, final nun, pe, and taw.

2) While the size of the folios of both is about the same, the dimensions of the margins drawn by the scribes for each are noticeably different.

Each folio of Add.

14,534 has a lightly drawn rectangle (uniform throughout) measuring approximately

7%" x 4"; but each of our three fragments has a rectangle of about 6 9/16" x. 3.152782.

3) There is no apparent context for our fragments in Add.

14,534, apart from the unsubstantiated suggestion that they may belong to the missing introduction as noted above.

From this we must conclude that Fragments 3, 4 and 5 of Add.

17,126 are orphans, belonging neither to the manuscript they are bound with nor to Add.

14,534, though they are contemporary with both and all belong to the same scribal ` >"

Other minor features of the manuscript before us may be

summarized briefly.

Quotations are usually marked in the right margin with the sign /</ opposite each line in which words quoted occur; sometimes the arrowhead is in red and its dot black, and sometimes they are both black.

The punctuation mark that ends a "paragraph"

/.-- w--/ occurs usually in red and black, but once in red and silver (folio 1:7-( ܝ‎ Erasures are in evidence in folios ,ܦܟ‎ 9v, 10r, 12v, 14r, 24v, 26v, 27r, and 28r.

The meaning of the following signs in the right or left margins is not known: ܣ‎ (folios 75, 23925 286 J/X/

(folio 13r), /4/ (like a beth turned on its side -- folio 23v), and Pai (folio 28v).

These have all been retained in the edited text of this dissertation.

Not included are the various attempts at foliation described above; three English notes on quotations, "Luke II 40"

(folio 15v), "Luke II 42"

(folio 17r), and "Luke III 23"

(folio 15v); and the word "End" written lightly (and enigmatically) between lines 6 and 7 of folio 34r, above and to the right of the word ML.

THE RESTORATION

OF THE TEXT

That many of the folios of our manuscript are ina deplorable condition has already been deseribea.7>®

In this edition the text has been restored as much as possible without unnecessary editorial additions.

Corrections and comments will be found in the next chapter.

Only the following additions have been made to it:

1) folio numbers at the top of each page and line numbers in the left margin for easy reference; 2) square brackets [ ] indicating a lacuna in the text caused by irremediable damage} 2" and 3) words and/or letters within the square brackets suggested by the context and proposed by the present editor.

Apart from these additions, the text stands uncorrected.

To restore the text, a photostat copy of the manuscript was xeroxed.

Three typical pages (folios 2r, 22r and 38v) of the resulting, unrestored, xerox copy are found in Appendix B, and a comparison of them with the final edited text will illustrate the method of restoration.

Folio 22r is an example of a clean page whose blemishes were removed and faded letters

"touched-up" with black ink, care being taken not to eliminate

diacritical points.

Folio 2r required more "touching-up" and its last five lines were rewritten by the editor.

Under ordinary light, much of folio 38v is illegible in the Manuscript.

The restored text in the editor's handwriting is his reading of the page under ultra-violet light.

Folios 35 to 38 had to be read and reproduced in this way.

Many doubtful or illegible words in the stained folios of the Manuscript were clarified by the use of ultra-violet light, and where these readings are unambiguous they appear in this edition unmarked.

The text of British Museum Manuscript Add.

17,126 as thus restored is reproduced in the pages that follow.
