Chapter 59

THE FOURTEENTH SHOWING

Christ, works in mercy in all His beloved children who are submissive and obedient to Him.

And grace works with mercy, specifically in two properties, as it was showed. This working belongs to the Third

Person, the Holy Spirit. He does the works of rewarding and giving. Rewarding is a great gift, that the Lord, honorably fulfilling His pledge, makes to those who have labored hard.

Giving is a work of courtesy, which He does freely, by grace, fulfilling and surpassing all that is desired by creatures.

Thus in our Father, God Almighty, we have our being. In our Mother, Christ, we have our reforming and our restoration by mercy. In Him, our parts are made one, and all is made perfect man. And by the harvest and the giving of grace, we are completely filled by the Holy Spirit.

Our substance is in our Father, God Almighty. Our substance is in our Mother, God All-wisdom. And our substance is in our Lord, God the Holy Spirit, All-goodness. For our substance is whole in each person of the Trinity, which is one God. Our sensuality is only in the Second Person, Christ

Jesus, in Whom are the Father and the Holy Spirit. In Him and by Him we are powerfully taken out of hell, and out of the wretchedness on earth, and are gloriously brought up into heaven and blissfully joined to our substance, increased in richness and nobility by all the virtue of Christ and by the grace and working of the Holy Spirit.

Chapter 59 Wickedness is turned to bliss by mercy and grace in the chosen; for the property of God is to do good against evil through Jesus, our

Mother in natural grace; the noblest soul in virtue is the meekest; and from the ground of meekness we receive other virtues.

All this bliss we have by mercy and grace. We might never have had or known this kind of bliss unless the property of goodness, which is God, had been opposed. By this opposition we have this bliss. For wickedness has been permitted to rise in opposition to goodness, and the goodness of mercy

and grace worked against that wickedness and turned everything to goodness and glory for all those who shall be saved.

For goodness is that property in God that does good against evil. Thus Jesus Christ, who does good against evil, is our true Mother. We have our being from Him, in whom the ground of motherhood begins, with all the sweet preservation of love that follows endlessly.

As truly as God is our Father, so truly is God our Mother.

This truth He showed in everything, but especially in those sweet words where He says, "I am it!" — that is to say, "I am the might and the goodness of Fatherhood. I am it — the wisdom and nature of Motherhood. I am it — the light and grace that is all-blessed Love. I am it — the Trinity. I am it — the Unity. I am it — the noble sovereign goodness of every kind of thing. I am it — that which makes you long and love.

I am it — the endless fulfillment of all true desires!"

For where the soul is highest, noblest and most full of honor, there it is lowest, meekest and mildest. From this substantial ground, we have all the virtue in our sensuality as the gift of nature and with the help and assistance of mercy and grace, without which we cannot profit.

Our high Father, Almighty God, Who is Being, knew us and loved us from before any time. From this knowing, in His most marvelous deep charity, He willed that the Second Person should become our Mother, our Brother and our Savior, with the foreseeing, endless counsel of all the blessed Trinity. From this it follows that, as truly as God is our Father, so truly is God our Mother. Our Father wills, our Mother works, and our good Lord the Holy Spirit confirms.

And, therefore, it is our place to love our God, in Whom we have our being, thanking Him reverently and praising Him for our creation, mightily praying to our Mother for mercy and pity and to our Lord the Holy Spirit for help and grace.

For in these three is all our life: nature, mercy and grace. From these we have mildness, patience and pity, and the hatred of sin and wickedness, for hatred of sin and wickedness belongs properly to virtue.

Thus is Jesus our true Mother in nature from our first mak-
