Part 4 On Naturalism and Platonism
Part 4
On Naturalism
and Platonism
In the final section of the book, we turn our attention to naturalism and Platonism. The discussion of naturalism is largely a prelude to the discussion of atheistic Platonism in the final chapter. We consider such Platonism to be the main rival to theistic metaethics. So after disambiguating what’s meant by “naturalism” in chapter 17, we turn to Platonism, especially the view of Erik Wielenberg, in the final chapter. It’s just one version of secular nonnatural ethics, of course, and it’s a view that resonates with our own in important ways; nevertheless, we hope that the discussion identifies several central concerns about atheistic Platonism that help show that the explanation that theism provides is a better one.
