About this web edition

Lutheran Missionaries, Landmarks and Legacies — Gettysburg, PA, USA to Guntur, AP, India was written by Syam S. Pilli of Virginia, USA, and published in the TCFNJ-GTCM Souvenir 2014. UECF.NET presents it here as a free, searchable web book.

The source

The original is a 15-page article laid out in Microsoft Publisher. It opens with a prologue on the coming of Christianity to India and a table of the foreign missions that reached the Telugu country before 1842, then follows the American Lutheran Mission from the Pennsylvania Ministerium and Gettysburg to Guntur, describing nine landmarks the mission left in the city and the missionaries after whom they are named: Father J. C. F. Heyer, Rev. Walter Gunn, Rev. Dr. L. B. Wolf, Rev. Dr. John Roy Strock, Dr. Anna S. Kugler and Rev. Dr. John Aberly. The complete text, every photograph and both maps are reproduced here, and the original page scans are available in each chapter and on the contents page. You can also download the original PDF.

What UECF.NET added

  • Chapters and sections. The article’s numbered landmarks and headings have been arranged into 12 chapters, each with an outline, so a landmark and the biography of its missionary sit together.
  • Search. Press Ctrl/ + K (or /) anywhere to search names, places, dates and institutions across the whole book; filter by missionaries, landmarks or headings.
  • Navigation. A chapter picker, previous/next buttons, keyboard arrows (← →), a contents sidebar with the nine landmarks and six missionaries, and a phone-friendly bottom bar.
  • Reading tools. Light and dark mode, adjustable text size, bookmarks for chapters or sections (saved in your browser only), copy link, copy text, share and print, and a “resume where I left off” link on the contents page.
  • Images. Every photograph and map can be enlarged; captions follow the original, with the names in the group photograph transcribed.

The text has been transcribed faithfully from the PDF, including the author’s spellings and phrasing; only obvious line-break hyphenation has been rejoined. Chapter titles, subtitles and section headings are editorial.
