'Bruno Scott James's translation and editing are alike quite admirable; the dialectic of the Saint is as close-knit as a lawyer's brief; his psychology as penetrating as (though clearer than) Stendhal's; his style, on occasion, as dazzling as Chesterton's'
Daily Telegraph 'represents vividly the passionate temper which inspired the greatest of medieval letter-writers.
. It contains evidence of priceless value for the historian, on a host of public affairs'
Church Times 'This is a book that every lover of St Bernard will want to possess
. one feels that the original author has come to life again in his translator' "
Catholic Herald his distinguished translation contains all the major correspondence of St Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the most influential figures in the intellectual, spiritual and political development of medieval Europe and the last of the Fathers of the Church. St Bernard's studious, ascetic life and stirring eloquence made him the oracle of Christendom. He was a man of action also: he founded more than seventy monasteries; drew up the statutes of the Knights Templars in 1128; secured the recognition of Pope Innocent II; and by his preaching kindled the enthusiasm of France for the second crusade.
Bernard's own accounts of his participation in all these events, among many others, including, for instance, his confrontation with Abelard, are contained in this invaluable volume.
Professor Kienzle's new introduction takes into account the wealth of scholarly research since the first publication of Scott James's translation in 1953, discussing the place of letter-writing in monastic literature, and providing a short biography of Bernard with reference to the letters and a general appreciation of Bernard's letters and their reflection of medieval society.
A new chronology and select bibliography are also included, as well as a table of dates and recipients and a full index.
