ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to express my gratitude to several people who contributed in different ways to the writing of the new introduction. Roger Thorp helped to shape the content and focus. AnneMarie Luijendijk prepared the selected bibliography and designed the table in the back matter with painstaking scrutiny. Readers of James's translation will be able for the first time to start from James's numbering system to find the corresponding

Latin letters in the Leclercq-Rochais edition and to learn what dates are assigned to them in the Gastaldelli edition. Tammy Zambo greatly expanded and improved the index, also making the volume much more usable for scholars. Brian McGuire made helpful suggestions on the content, as did Christopher Holdsworth, who provided several references for specific letters and proposed other valuable clarifications to the text.

My father Lewis, his wife Bette, and her daughter Jane encouraged and supported my finding the periods of quiet and concentration needed for completing the new introduction during a time of great stress for us all. I wish to dedicate the new introduction to them. Finally, my daughter

Kathleen read and commented on the new introduction with the very helpful perspective of an undergraduate student.
