Part V. Medieval and Renaissance literature
In 1954, Lewis was appointed to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge. Since he was a specialist in that subject, it is not surprising that the majority of reviews published in this book are about the literature of those periods. Here Lewis addresses problems within different medieval and Renaissance genres, the literary criticism of those times, and the enigmatic figure of Arthur. He also considers such poets and writers as Andreas Capellanus, Dante, the authors of the Romance of the Rose, Malory, Wyatt, Spenser and Shakespeare. A long essay on Malory, ‘The English prose Morte’, published in 1960, is reprinted for the first time.
