. John Wesley, "Sermon on the Mount, Discourse VIII," in The Works of the Rev. John Wesley, A.M., ed. Thomas Jackson, 3rd ed., 14 vols. (London:
Wesleyan Methodist Book Room, 1872; reprinted Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1979), V:366. Unless otherwise indicated, all subsequent references to Wesley's writings will be to this edition of his Works, cited in parentheses in the main body of the text by volume and page number(s).
. It is astonishing in the light of this and similar passages that Wellman J.
Warner, in The Wesleyan Movement in the Industrial Revolution (New York:
Macmillan, 1930; reprinted Russell & Russell, 1967), could still speak of the "wholeheartedness with which [Wesley's Methodism] approved economic enterprise and the pursuit of gain" (p. 138), or suppose that economic success could be viewed unambiguously as a mark of divine approval for Wesley's Methodism (p. 161). Warner may be right in attributing these views to Methodists after the time of Wesley, but there is no possibility of attributing these views to Wesley himself.
The "Index of Scriptural References" provided by Albert C. Outler in his edition of Wesley's sermons lists 36 references to I Tim. 6:9-10; see The Works of John Wesley, vol. 4: Sermons IV, 115-51, edited by Albert C. Outler
(Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1987), p. 681. This does not include references to speaking on the texts in his J ournal or allusions to them in his letters and essays.
