ABOUT SPTC
Holy Trinity Brompton launched St Paul’s Theological Centre in 2005, following the growth of Alpha worldwide and the establishment of HTB as a major resourcing centre for other churches in the United Kingdom. SPTC continues to play a key role in the ministry of Alpha International and as developer of theological resources. In addition, in 2007 it became part of St Mellitus College, the newest theological college of the Church of England. St Mellitus is a pioneer in ‘church-based’ training, preparing students for ordination through a mixture of classroom learning and on the job church ministry. Working through Alpha International and St Mellitus, SPTC has sponsored a number of significant theological conferences, produced the popular Godpod podcast, and begun to plant branches around the world.
The central vision of SPTC is to help ‘bring theology back to the heart of the church’. Rather than doing theology in a university or seminary setting, SPTC links its theology and its training as closely as possible to the life of the local church. The Centre is developing a rich seam of theological reflection on church life, following themes that arise from Christian ministry in churches like HTB and those who use the Alpha Course around the world. SPTC Books is an imprint of Alpha International, designed to help develop this theological work. It seeks to publish work linked in one way or another to the wider Alpha network, exploring theology in a way that is truly ecumenical. We will bring together the best of all kinds of theology from all parts of the church – all who are held together by a common belief in the God revealed in Jesus Christ and in the expectation of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit as the one who makes true worshipful theology possible.
