Finney on Revival
Charles G. Finney · 1868

About this book
Lectures on Revivals of Religion is a course of twenty-two lectures delivered by Charles G. Finney to his own congregation and reported, with his consent, by the editor of the New York Evangelist. Finney tells his readers in the Lecturer's Preface that he entered upon the series without any prepared plan, letting “one subject naturally introduce another” as the state of his people seemed to require — and that he was moved to speak plainly because, on returning from a journey to the Mediterranean, he found that “the spirit of revival had greatly declined in the United States, and that a spirit of jangling and controversy alarmingly prevailed.”
The lectures move from what a revival of religion actually is, and when one may be expected, through the means that promote it — prevailing prayer, the prayer of faith, the spirit of prayer, prayer meetings, and the wise, Spirit-filled winning of souls — to the practical work of preaching the gospel, the help churches owe their ministers, the measures that further revival, and the hindrances that quench it. The closing lectures turn from the preacher to the hearer: false comforts for sinners, direct instructions to the anxious, and counsel for new converts on backsliding and on growth in grace.
Text transcribed from the 1868 Fleming H. Revell Company edition (New York, Chicago, Toronto, London and Edinburgh; entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1868 by E. J. Goodrich). Charles Grandison Finney (1792–1875) died over a century ago and this work is in the public domain. This UECF.NET Web Book presents the complete, unabridged text of all twenty-two lectures with Scripture references linked to the NKJV reader.
