Charles Grandison Finney (1792–1875) was a lawyer turned evangelist who became the foremost revivalist of America’s Second Great Awakening, preaching across New York State and the Northeast through the 1820s and 1830s before serving as pastor of the Broadway Tabernacle in New York City and later as pastor, professor and president of Oberlin College. His Lectures on Revivals of Religion — collected here as a full searchable Web Book in English and Telugu — taught that revival is not a mysterious visitation but the right use of God-ordained means, and it remains one of the most influential texts of 19th-century evangelicalism.

About Charles G. Finney
Charles Grandison Finney (1792–1875) was raised on the New York frontier and trained as a lawyer before a dramatic conversion in 1821 led him to abandon law for ministry. Ordained a Presbyterian minister, he preached revivals across upstate New York and New England through the 1820s and early 1830s — the region so marked by these awakenings that historians later called it the “Burned-over District.” His introduction of “new measures” in revival meetings (protracted meetings, the anxious seat, allowing women to pray publicly) was controversial among fellow clergy but proved widely influential. In 1832 he became pastor of the Second Free Presbyterian Church and later the Broadway Tabernacle in New York City. From 1835 he taught theology at the newly founded Oberlin College in Ohio, serving as its second president from 1851 to 1866, and continued preaching revivals in America and, on two visits, in England and Scotland. Finney died at Oberlin in 1875.
