25. THE DOOR HINGES AND THE COMPLETION OF THE: House Of The Lord

BOOK TWO
it is necessary to keep this firmly raised up to heavenly things to preserve the lamps placed upon it not only from falling but also from any change in condition. But after saying, And the golden lampstands, five on the right hand, and five on the left, over against the oracle, of pure gold, he added:
24.4 (7:49) And the flowers like lilies, and the lamps over them of gold. Taken literally it seems that the top portion of the lampstands was bent backwards like a lily which, as we read, is what happened in the tabernacle lampstand, for both its centre stem and the reeds which protruded from it are described as having had a great many lilies with cups and little globes.l0 Now the flowers of the lily, as has often been said, represent the beauty of the evergreen land of the living" of which blessed Peter says that we have been regenerated by the Lord unto a lively hope, unto an inheritance, incorruptible, undefiled and unfading, reserved in heaven.12 And well have golden lily flowers been wrought in the lampstand of God's house because divine scripture is habitually urging us to spurn temporal joys and seek the good things of our heavenly homeland, and just as the lampstand holds the lily flowers aloft and has golden lamps on top, so all the elect who are contained in this sacred scripture are shown to have had their thoughts elevated to the things above and to have sought and received the good things of heaven from the Lord. We have treated rather fully of the table and lampstand and the two altars and the vessels of the Lord's house in the books which we have written on the construction of the tabernacle and of the priestly ve~tments.'~
So if anyone desires information on these matters according to our capacity to interpret them which draws upon the tradition of the Fathers. let him consult that work.
25. THE DOOR HINGES AND THE COMPLETION OF THE
HOUSE OF THE LORD
25.1 There follows the verse:
(750) And the hinges for the doors of the inner house of the Holy lo cf. Ex 25:31-36 l1 supra 19.8 ** l2 I P 1 : 3 4 l3 cf. Bede, De tab. 1,633.977; 2, 1361; 3. 1240

BEDE: ON THE TEMPLE
of Holies and for the doors of the house of the temple were of gold. If the doors of the inner house of the Holy of Holies are the ministries of angels which unlock the entrance to celestial life for us when we have left the body, and the doors of the house of the temple are the holy teachers and priests who throw open to us the first thresholds of the present Church by teaching, baptizing and communicating to us the mysteries of the Lord's body and blood, what are the hinges of both doors but the minds and hearts of these angels or saints by which they cleave fixedly to the contemplation and love of their creator so that those who never turn their gaze from the will of him whom they serve may thereby properly fulfil the ministry entrusted to them? For the gates are opened and closed at the appropriate time, but at no time do they leave their hinges, because both angels and holy people, whether they receive the faithful and the elect in this life of faith, or in the other life of vision, keep their minds ever firmly rooted in love.
These hinges are well said to have been made of gold for this reason, namely, either because of the merit of their own glory or because of the love they have for God.
25.2 (751) And Solomon finished all the work that he did in the house of the Lord. Solomon finishes the work he did in the house of the Lord when on the last day our peaceable king glorifies all the elect with the immortality of the resurrection. Otherwise as long as the condition of this world continues, Solomon does indeed do the work of the Lord's house but does not yet finish it, because the Lord inspires and helps the hearts of the elect to perform good works, but does not grant immunity from sin to anyone who is only a sojourner in this life, for he reserves this gift for the blessedness of the life to comc. But he finishes all the work of his temple and renders it fit for dedication when he takes to his eternal lungdom his elect who have been transferred from this life. And this is well illustrated both in the fact that the temple was built in seven years but finished and dedicated in the eighth. For the whole of this time runs through a cycle of seven days; the eighth is the day of judgement and the resurrection to come from which the sixth and eleventh psalms get their title.' And indeed what follows aptly applies to this time:
/233/ 25.3 (751) And he brought in the things that David his father had cf. Ps 6:l; Ps 1l:l

BOOK TWO
dedicated, the silver and the gold, and the vessels, and stored them in the treasuries of the house of the Lord. For silver applies to the clarity of eloquence, gold to the brilliance of wisdom, and vessels generally to rational creatures; and David, Solomon's father, sanctifies the silver when God the Father strengthens speakers with the grace of the Holy Spirit to speak the word of the Gospel; he sanctifies the gold when he enlightens those endowed with natural ability by filling them with his Spirit in order to contemplate the wonders in his law; he sanctifies the vessels too when, having bestowed the grace of this
Spirit on all the Church's children in general that they may love the gifts of eternal salvation, he fires them with a desire for them.
This silver, this gold, these consecrated vessels Solomon brings into the temple, when, after the universal judgement is over, our Lord brings into the joy of his heavenly kingdom all the elect, i.e. the company both of teachers and the rest of the faithful, and he lays up the various kinds of vessels, silver or gold, in the treasuries of the Lord's house when he hides in the covert of his countenance away from the bustle of human beings those who have merited to enjoy the abundance of his sweetness.2 It is fitting that the treasuries in which the vessels of election should be hidden are many, whereas the house of the Lord in which these treasuries were is one; for on the one hand, the Church in which all the elect are contained is one, however much they may differ in merits, and on the other hand, the heavenly homeland promised to all the elect is one and not of different kinds, even though, just as star differs from star in glory, so also is the resurrection ofthe dead.3 Both of these things the Lord, the very judge and distributor of rewards, has shown in one sentence when he says, In my Father's house there are many rn~nsions.~
The reason why Solomon made one house of the Lord but furnished it with many treasuries to accommodate the vessels of various kinds, though it was sanctified with only one blessing, was that there is one house of the Father not made with hands that will last eternally in h e a ~ e n , ~ but many mansions in it to receive all who fear him, and the Lord blesses those that love him, both little ones and great.6 Amen.
