Bakht Singh (1903–2000) was an Indian Christian evangelist, born to a Sikh family in Punjab, who was converted to Christ as a student in Canada in 1929. Returning to India in 1933, he preached across the country and founded an indigenous, New-Testament-pattern movement of local assemblies — independent of any Western mission board — that grew to thousands of congregations, with his best-known center, Hebron, in Hyderabad. His testimony, How I Found God and Perfect Peace, tells the story of his own conversion and early walk of faith.

About Bakht Singh
Bakht Singh Chabra was born on June 6, 1903, in Joiya village, Sargodha District, Punjab, in what was then British India, into a Sikh family. While studying agricultural engineering in Canada in the late 1920s, he received a New Testament from a bank manager and, on December 16, 1929, became a Christian — an experience he described as an immediate and radical change in his habits and desires. He was baptized in Vancouver, British Columbia, in February 1932, and returned to India in 1933 to begin a preaching ministry.
Bakht Singh preached widely across India in the years that followed, including a widely remembered 1941 campaign in Madras (now Chennai), and went on to found an indigenous movement of local assemblies patterned on the New Testament church — deliberately independent of any Western mission board or denomination — which spread to thousands of congregations across India and among the Indian diaspora. His best-known center, called Hebron, was established in Hyderabad, where large annual gatherings drew tens of thousands of believers. He died in Hyderabad on September 17, 2000.
