Celebrate God's Goodness

“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”

    Isaiah 40:28KJV

The first movement of C.A.L.M. — Celebrate God's Goodness — begins where faith always begins: with who God is. This opening chapter of Section 1 grounds the whole book in the doctrine of God's sovereignty, the conviction that He reigns over history, nations, and the small, unglamorous corners of an ordinary Tuesday.

Anxiety thrives on the sense that things are spinning out of control. The biblical response is not to deny that circumstances feel chaotic, but to remember who holds them. Scripture repeatedly pairs the vastness of God's rule (He measures the oceans in the hollow of His hand, Isaiah 40:12) with the tenderness of His attention (He knows the number of hairs on a head, Matthew 10:30). Sovereignty, rightly understood, is not a cold doctrine — it is the very reason a worried heart can exhale.

This chapter's summary point is simple but weighty: rejoicing is easier when it starts with truth about God rather than a forecast of circumstances. Before requests are made (Section 2) or concerns are released (Section 3), the anxious heart first needs a settled answer to the question, “Is God big enough, and near enough, for this?”

    The Anxious Instinct

Anxiety often begins with a small, unspoken lie: that the world's outcomes rest on our shoulders alone, and that nothing is truly in control but our own vigilance.

    The Faith Response

Rejoicing in God's sovereignty replaces the illusion of total control with confidence in a Ruler who is both powerful enough to govern the universe and near enough to govern the details of one life.

    Practical Steps

    • Sovereignty means God's rule extends over the largest events and the smallest details alike.
    • Remembering God's past faithfulness is a practical tool for facing an uncertain future.
    • Rejoicing in who God is comes before — and strengthens — every other step toward calm.

    Reflect & Discuss

    1. What uncertain situation in your life right now would look different if you fully trusted God's sovereignty over it?
    2. How does remembering a past instance of God's faithfulness change how you view a present worry?
    3. In what areas are you tempted to act as though the outcome depends on you alone?
