Humility: The Beauty of Holiness by Andrew Murray
First published in 1895, Humility is one of the best loved of Andrew Murray's devotional writings. In a preface and twelve short meditations — each opened by a verse of Scripture — the South African pastor and Dutch Reformed minister Andrew Murray (1828–1917) traces humility from the glory of the creature before its Creator, through the humility of Jesus and His teaching and disciples, into its outworking in daily life, holiness, sin, faith, death to self, happiness, and exaltation. Murray's burden throughout is simple and searching: that the lowliness of Christ, not mere contrition, is the root of every grace, and that a Christlike humility toward others is the only sure proof of humility before God. The book closes with four short notes drawn from the writings of William Law.
