The AuthorAbout Bakht Singh (1903–2000)
Bakht Singh is remembered as one of the most influential Indian Christian evangelists of the twentieth century, particularly associated with Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh.
Born on 6 June 1903 in Joiya village, Punjab, into a devout Sikh family, Bakht Singh studied in India before travelling to England and then Canada for further education. In Canada, through the friendship of a Christian couple, John and Edith Hayward, he came to personal faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized in Vancouver in 1932 — a decisive break from his Sikh upbringing.
Returning to India in 1933, he spent the rest of his life in itinerant evangelism and the planting of indigenous, self-governing local church assemblies, centered from the 1940s on the Jehovah-Shammah assembly he founded in Hyderabad. He is widely regarded as a formative figure in the growth of indigenous, non-denominational Christianity in modern India. Bakht Singh died in Hyderabad on 17 September 2000.
