  • This is Augustine’s expression. He begins by listing three alternative interpretations, viz. ‘all those things which meet the wants of this life’, ‘the sacrament of the body of Christ’ and ‘the spiritual food’, namely ‘divine precepts which we ought daily to meditate and to labour after’. He himself prefers the latter explanation. But he concludes that if anyone wishes to understand ‘daily bread’ as referring also to ‘food necessary for the body’ or to ‘the sacrament of the Lord’s body’, then ‘we must take all three meanings conjointly’. That is, ‘We are to ask for all at once as daily bread, both the bread necessary for the body, and the visible hallowed bread (sc. Holy Communion) and the invisible bread of the word of God’ (VI. 25, 27).
