About this book

Life of Charles G. Finney by A. M. Hills

Written in 1902 by A. M. Hills, then president of Texas Holiness University, this compact biography traces the life of revivalist Charles Grandison Finney (1792–1875) from his unlikely beginnings as a small-town lawyer with an ungodly upbringing, through his dramatic conversion in the fall of 1821, into the revivals he led across the towns of western New York — Antwerp, Gouverneur, Western, Rome, Utica, Auburn, Troy, and New Lebanon — and on to New York City, his long labors at Oberlin College, two preaching tours of England and Scotland, and his teaching on preachers and preaching, on Freemasonry, and on Christian sanctification. Hills, writing “from the standpoint of holiness” and drawing on Finney’s own Memoirs and Professor G. F. Wright’s Life of Finney, quotes Finney extensively in his own words throughout. This UECF.NET web edition follows the source text in full and preserves its chapter order, headings, and the wording of its extensive quotations from Finney himself.

This UECF.NET edition follows the source text in full; chapter divisions, headings and Finney’s own quoted words are reproduced as in the original. (UECF.NET was separately asked about a different, modern, copyrighted 1999 biography of Finney also titled “Apostle of Revival” by Bonnie C. Harvey (Barbour Publishing) — that book remains under copyright and is not reproduced here or anywhere on this site.)
