Finney (1902) is a compact, warmly personal biography of Charles Grandison Finney (1792–1875), the New York lawyer turned evangelist whose preaching helped ignite the Second Great Awakening. Hills follows Finney from his unconverted years and dramatic 1821 conversion, through his training and early campaigns at Antwerp, “Sodom,” Gouverneur, Dekalb, Western, Rome, Utica, Auburn and Troy; the controversy that produced the New Lebanon Convention; the great city revivals at Stephentown, Wilmington, Philadelphia, Reading, Rochester, New York City, Buffalo, Providence and Boston; his New York City pastorate, his trip to Italy, and his Lectures on Revival; his years of teaching and preaching at Oberlin College and his renewed baptism with the Holy Ghost; two visits to England and Scotland; and Finney's own writing on preachers and preaching, on Freemasonry, and on Christian sanctification.
