Professor Oliver O’Donovan goes much further than this in his formative book Resurrection and Moral Order: An Outline for Evangelical Ethics (IVP and Eerdmans, 1986). He argues that the resurrection of Jesus is the foundation on which Christian ethics rests, because it proclaims that the created world order has been vindicated and reaffirmed by God; indeed, it has been redeemed, renewed and transformed. ‘From the resurrection we look not only back to the created order which is vindicated, but forwards to our eschatological participation in that order’ (p. 22), not only ‘back to what is reaffirmed there, the order of creation’, but also ‘forward to what is anticipated there, the kingdom of God’ (p. 26).
