2 Evangelism through the local church
This chapter was written before Michael Green’s mammoth book Evangelism through the Local Church (Hodder & Stoughton, 1990) was published and came into my hands. Michael Green is a rare combination of theologian and evangelist, and has had an unusually wide and varied experience of evangelism. With that rollicking, infectious enthusiasm with which he always writes, he divides his theme into four parts: (1) ‘Issues for the Church’ (the nature, necessity, basis and sphere of evangelism in a multi-faith society), (2) ‘The Secular Challenge’ (four valuable chapters on apologetics), (3) ‘Church-based Evangelism’ (evangelistic preaching, personal evangelism, missions and other methods) and (4) ‘Practical Appendices’ (courses for enquirers, discovery groups for new Christians, the training of teams, the use of drama, leading worship, etc.). Here are nearly 600 pages of guidance – theological, personal and practical – from one whose head, heart and hands are together committed to the evangelistic outreach of the local church.
