    About this edition

This web edition reproduces the complete text of the 1900 Curts & Jennings printing of Volume IV, as digitized by the Internet Archive (autobiographyofc04inspur). The scan includes an OCR text layer. Running headers were removed and hyphenated line-breaks rejoined; the wording itself is the source OCR, not a modern rewrite. Decorative black-letter chapter titles, which OCR could not read reliably, are given from the volume’s own contents list. Illustrations from the 1900 plates are included where they could be extracted cleanly.
