FOREWORD We are pleased to participate in the publication of this selection of Philip Schaff's writings.
Not only were his views important in the development of American religious thought in the 19th century, but we believe that many of his insights are worthy of study in light of the present situation of the American churches.
It is our hope that the selections included will be historically informative and theologically stimulating.
Dikran Y. Hadidian, General Editor, deserves our thanks for his encouragement and his willingness to accept the volume as part of this series.
We also wish to express our gratitude to Mrs.
Jane Vandevort who has carefully typed the manuscript and to Mrs. Jean Yrigoyen who has prepared the material for publication.
