This book owes much to many. Charles A. Coulson, Jeremy R. Knowles, and R. J. P. Williams nurtured my love of the natural sciences at Oxford University back in the 1970s, while at the same time pointing me to a deeper vision of reality than that which the sciences could offer on their own. I am grateful to many colleagues at Oxford University in more recent years, especially at the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion, where many aspects of natural philosophy are regularly discussed. I am particularly grateful to two anonymous readers of the original typescript, who made some highly perceptive and helpful suggestions for its improvement, and to Joanna Collicutt, who helped me see how I could weave these ideas together coherently.
